Privacy
Short version: this is a plain website. It sets no cookies, runs no tracking or analytics scripts, and loads nothing from anybody else’s servers. We count how many people read each page from the site’s own request records, which do not include your IP address. We do not know who you are, and we are not trying to find out.
What this site does not do
- No cookies. None, of any kind. The one thing we do store locally is described below, and it is not a cookie.
- No analytics scripts or tracking. No Google Analytics, no pixels, no tag managers, no session recording, no fingerprinting. Visits are counted from request records instead, as described below.
- No third-party requests. The fonts, images, stylesheets and the one small script are all served from this site. Your browser does not contact any other company to display these pages, so no other company learns that you visited.
- No advertising, and nothing is ever sold or shared for marketing.
- No accounts, no forms. There is nothing here to sign up for and nothing to submit.
Some pages link to other sites: the licensing pages and articles to creativecommons.org and apache.org, so you can check the license texts against the source, and our project pages to GitHub, npm, nodejs.org and the Terraform Registry, where the code and packages live. The footer of every page links to our pages on GitHub, the Terraform Registry and LinkedIn. Those are ordinary links: nothing is fetched from them unless you click, and if you do, you are on their site under their privacy practices, not ours. The icons beside the footer links are drawn by this site, not loaded from those companies.
The one thing stored on your device
The page opens in light or dark according to your device’s own
setting. The sun-and-moon button in the header switches it. If you press that
button, your choice is saved in your browser’s local storage under the
name atc-theme, so the site looks the same next time.
That value is the word light or dark and nothing
else. It is not a cookie, it is never sent to our server, it holds no
identifier, and it cannot be read by any other site. Clearing your browser data
removes it and the page goes back to following your device. If you never
press the button, nothing is stored at all.
What is recorded when you visit
This site is delivered by Amazon CloudFront. Like any web server, it has to see your IP address to send you the page. It writes a short record of each request to storage that only we can read. Each record holds the page or file you asked for, the time, whether it was served, the page that linked you here if your browser sent it, your browser’s user-agent string, and the country your connection came from.
The records do not include your IP address. We chose which details are recorded, and the address is not one of them. CloudFront works out the country from the address before the record is written; the address itself is not kept.
We use these records to keep the site running, to understand errors, and to count how many people read each page and which sites sent them. Totals are all we look at. We do not build profiles from the records, we do not combine them with anything else, and we do not share them. Each record is deleted after 30 days.
If you email us
We keep your message and your address so we can reply and so we have a record of what was asked. We do not add you to a mailing list. We do not share your message outside the organization except where the law requires it.
Children
This site is informational and is not directed at children. It collects nothing from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this ever stops being true — if we add a form, a newsletter or anything that collects information — we will say so on this page before it goes live, not after.
