About

Automate the Cloud Inc. is a Kentucky nonprofit corporation based in Louisville. It was incorporated on September 3, 2026, and the IRS recognizes it as a 501(c)(3) public charity, effective the same date. It has no paid staff: all directors and officers serve as volunteers and receive no compensation.

What we are for

Our bylaws set out what the organization exists to do:

  • Public education in information technology, with a specialty in cloud computing: courses, bootcamps, workshops, clinics, and freely available materials.
  • Technical help for organizations that serve the public. Free or below-cost IT education, consulting, development, and infrastructure support for under-resourced nonprofit, charitable, religious, educational, and governmental organizations, and other groups organized for charitable, educational, or public purposes.
  • Scholarships for students, awarded on objective and nondiscriminatory criteria under our Scholarship Policy.

Cloud technology is our specialty, not a limit on what we teach, and we work without geographic restriction.

What we have done so far

  • Terraform modules for AWS. Thirty-two modules, published on the Terraform Registry and GitHub in October 2026. Each one documents its defaults and why they were chosen, so they can be studied as well as used. See the modules.
  • BAMF. A library that gives bash scripts consistent logging, named exit codes, and cleanup that always runs, released as version 1.0 on GitHub in October 2026. Read about BAMF.
  • OpenWaymark. An open format for portable study bundles of practice questions and flashcards, with a reference validator and command-line tool on npm. Read about OpenWaymark.
  • Waymark Study. An offline study app that reads OpenWaymark bundles. It is in development. Read about Waymark Study.

Courses are not open for enrollment yet, and the first scholarship cycle has not opened. Nonprofits that need technical help can write to us now.

How we work

Our bylaws commit us to keeping our core educational materials, including publications, courses, and example infrastructure code, freely and publicly available. Articles and tutorials are published under CC BY-NC 4.0 with an additional permission for internal training, and code under the Apache License 2.0. The licensing page explains what that lets you do.

How we are governed

A volunteer board of directors governs the organization. Its formation documents and adopted policies are published in full, with the names of individuals and any street addresses omitted. Our first annual return to the IRS covers 2026 and will be published once it is filed.
